17th June 1916 - Eight sons of Hanbury widow serving

At the Front:

1st Batt: Brigade training in Menoirs ground in the vicinity of Borsy-weather cold and dull.

2nd Batt: At 1.00am the division on the right made a raid . The enemy retaliated with fire on the Brickstacks. The Batt took up a new position in the evening as the divisional front had been extended. The Batt had to hold the whole of the Brigade front of Auchy Section. Batt HQ moved to No 2 Siding in front of Wimpole St.

3rd Batt: Batt marched to Longvevillette.

10th Batt: A draft of 21 men joined the Batt, most of whom are machine gunners.

On the Home Front:

Worcestershire and the War – Hanbury’s Proud Record – Hanbury Parish has quite done it’s share towards providing men for the Army. On mother, a widow, had had eight sons serving. Two of them have given their lives, their names being William Brazier, killed in 1914, aged 32 years at the time of death; and Walter Brazier, 4th North Staffordshires, killed in 1914. The other sons are Albert 32, attested and called up; Edward 30, Worcestershire Regiment, Charles, 25 2/8th Worcestershires; George 21, Army Service; James, 20 Army Service; Henry 18, 6th Worcestershires. Mrs Brazier has given all her sons.

Lady Dudley’s Distinction – Among the lady workers honoured by mention in Sir Douglas Haig’s Despatch, was the Countess of Dudley, who since the early days of the war has been in charge of a hospital in France.

Mentioned in Dispatches – In the list of names of Sir Douglas Haig’s despatch, for gallant and distinguished conduct in the field appears that of Lieut. M. Day R.E. and old Vigorian and a son of Mr and J Day, Lansdowne Crescent, Worcester. Lieut Day came from the Malay Peninsular to join the Army. He has two other brothers and brother-in-law on active service.
