27th June 1916 - Wounded entertain Workhouse Inmates

At the Front:

2nd Batt: B and D Coys were on working parties. . A and C Coys were given a rest. The 9th HLI raided Mine Pt very successfully, capturing 42 prisoners, 2 machine guns and also blew in 2 mines. The 15th Division let off some gas on the right but no report has been received.

4th Batt: Brigade paraded at 9.00am for the last time before the advance. Bombardment by the artillery day and night.

9th Batt: Batt marched towards a fortified post called Sodom after dark as Twin Canals was taken over by the 3rd Indian Division.

Troops in poor condition and struggled over 6 miles of rough roads and most men arrived about 10.00pm. Stragglers came in many hours later and one man died of exhaustion.

Yeomanry/Cavalry: Two of the aeroplanes were found just before dawn, surrounded by Bedouin who were driven off. Later some Australian Light Horse Division arrived with wagons and took away the remains of the aircraft. On the march back, all stocks of corn and hay were burned along with some Bedouin huts.

SMD RFA: A Battery gunners Butler, Hale and Sharpe were wounded and Hale died later. Men resting in billets and bivouacs.

On the Home Front:

Wounded entertain Workhouse Inmates - A concert was given by the wounded soldiers from Battenhall Mount Hospital (arranged by Sergeant Banner) on Monday night at the workhouse. Mr Charlton Jones (Chairman of the House Committee) presided. Amongst others present were Mr W. H Jones (Chairman of the Board), Rev G F Hooper,… Hon Mrs Ogilvy and Miss Ogilvy, Commandant of the Hospital at Battenhall. The programme included - Opening chorus by ‘The Boys’, accompanist Lce-Corpl Ollerenshaw, Pte Faithfull, violin solo, Tpr Ricketts song The Veteran, Rifleman Gaskin, comic duet…..Mr Charlton Jones in proposing a vote of thanks to the soldiers said that these men, although wounded in serving their king and country, were forgetting their wounds and trying to make others happy..Sgt Banner replied and said that they would be pleased to come again. He knew that their Commandant, who was the best in England, would grant them time off.
