10th June 1916 - Bromsgrove Men Lost in Naval Battle

At the Front:

2nd Batt: During early morning, 2 of our mines exploded near the Eastern Twin Crater and another nearby. Artillery kept the new craters under surveillance all day. Weather cooler and some heavy thunderstorms.

10th Batt: batt returned with the Brigade to its former billets at Vignacourt, having mid-day lunch at St Ouen.

11th Batt: Admin of Salonika and surrounding area was taken over from the Greek authorities and the batt was involved in the husbandry of the local resources.

SMD RFA: Batt carrying on with emplacements. CO went on leave and Major SJ Thompson is commanding the Brigade.

On the Home Front:

G.R. Recruiting Army Veterinary Corps –The above Corps is now open to suitable Men, between the ages of 41 and 47 years. Candidates should be Men of Steady Character who have been accustomed to horses and who are able to ride. Bromsgrove Men Lost in Naval Battle – Five Bromsgrove men have been lost in a naval battle, three of whom were on HMS Invincible. They were Wm Burford, Royal Marines, Stoker Cameron Martin, and Stoker George Troth. The fourth death is that of Able Seaman W. Manning. The fifth is Stoker John Barrington, who was on HMS Queen Mary.

A Redditch Queen Mary Victim- Official news has been received that Joseph Yozall, who was on the Queen Mary in the great sea battle, has gone down with the ship. He was 26 years old, early in the year, when home on leave, he married.

The Band of the Depot of (Worcestershire Regiment) will play during the afternoon and evening (by kind permission of Col. Edwards and Officers of the Depot) 2pm to 10pm Admission 7d Children 3d (including War Tax) Convalescent Soldiers free.
