16th August 1916 - Yeomanry busy burying enemy casualites, estimated to be 900.

At the Front:

1st Batt: Inspection of clothing and a general clean up.

4th Batt: A new trench is being dug in front of the Firing line and Co went to look at the progress. At 3.15 am the gas horns sounded but it was a false alarm. A german aeroplane was heard over the Square which dropped 2 bombs after shutting off its engine. One failed to explode.

7th Batt: Aeroplane signallers and Snipers visit to school. Further training and bathing.

Yeomanry/Cavalry: Men busy burying the enemy casualties, estimated at 9000.

On the Home Front:

Lord Crawford Awaits Board’s Proposals – On Monday afternoon the Malvern Hills Conservators held their monthly meeting, in the open air at the British Camp, prior to a perambulation in the direction of the Wyche. A letter had been received from an official at the Board of Agriculture to acknowledge the receipt of a letter transmitting a resolution adopted by the Worcestershire Agricultural War Committee, on the subject of improving grazing on the Malvern Hills. Before this matter is dealt with Lord Crawford proposes to wait the proposals of the Malvern Hills Conservators.

Houses for Workers – The annual report of the Local Government Board on Housing and Town planning, covering the 12 months ending March 31st, 1916, states that in accordance with an agreement with the Treasury sanction was refused for loans for the purposes of fresh schemes, except in the cases where dwellings were urgently needed in connection with war requirements.
