2nd August 1916 - Father murders 3 month old daughter

At the Front:

1st Batt: Batt relieved pm. by 5/6th Royal Scots Reg and marched to billets in Bethune-billets good.

7th Batt: 150 yards of front was wired by Batt.

10th batt; Brigade inspection by Gen Pulteney GOC of 3rd Corps who thanked us for what we had done and expressed regret that we were leaving his Corps.

SMD RFA: Orders received to relieve the right group RA, 49th Division of 8th Army.

Yeomanry/Cavalry: British planning an attack for August 13th but Kress Von Kressenstein suddenly moved the whole force. Katia was quickly occupied and attacks were planned down the ridge of sand hills east and south of Romani.

On the Home Front:

The Bromsgrove Tragedy – At Bromsgrove on Tuesday, Michael Cook, Stone House, Fockbury, was brought up and charged with the wilful murder, on the 30th ult., of his three month old daughter, Superintendent Chare stated that it would be necessary to ask for the prisoner to be remanded for a week. The prisoner offered no objection.

Warning to Travellers – The Secretary of the War Office makes the following announcement: “Notice under the Defence of the Realm 1914 – Persons leaving the United Kingdom for destinations abroad are warned that documents whether printed or written other than those needed to establish their identity are liable to be detained at the ports of embarkation for examination. Travellers are therefore advised not to carry written or printed matter on their persons or in their luggage unless such documents are essential for the purposes of voyage. Travellers will save themselves much inconvenience if a few days before they intend to sail they despatch by post to their proposed destination abroad all documents not needed on the voyage”.
