26th December 1917 - Worcester Cycle Thief Caught

War Front:

1st Batt: Batt relieved the 7th Royal Berks in right sub-sector of Divisional Front in Passchendaele. Owing to the bright moonlight and snow, the relief was spotted. The heavy enemy barrage resulted in 6 other ranks killed, 4 missing and 28 wounded.

4th Batt: More training for the men and it snowed pm making the rations very late.

Yeomanry/Cavalry: The rain ceased and the brigade moved up in readiness to support the left wing of the attack. It was reported that the Turks planned a large counter attack of our defences north and east of Jerusalem.

Home Front:

Concientious Objector And Military Service – Fined £10 at Evesham – At the Evesham County Petty Sessions on Monday, Arthur Thorne, market gardener, Pitcher’s Hill, Wickhamford, was summoned under the Defence of the Realm Regulations for failing to post up in a conspicuous place on his premises a statement giving the names of his male employees between the ages of 18 and 41, on December 16th and further with failing to forward a copy of the above form to the Military Authorities. He admitted that the information was correct. Mr Thorne said, “I object on conscientious grounds, as I believe it to be against Divine teaching”.

Worcester Cycle Thief Caught – Sent to Prison for Six Months - At the City Prison Court today Henry Allen (30) pleaded guilty to 12 charges of stealing bicycles varied in value from £1.10s to £5 and the total value of them was about £50. Prisoner was asked to plead in respect to three charges and he said “Guilty” and added “I plead guilty to the lot”.
