13th August 1917 - COUNTY FARMERS’ UNION

Rolling casualty count: 7055

War Front:

2nd Batt: Batt. Doing firing practise on the beach

2/7th Batt: Capt RWF Boucher, 2nd Lt D Hitchen, 2nd Lt JA Cumberland went to 6 DW.

1/8th Batt: Batt in Brake Camp which was heavily shelled during the night, injuring 20 other ranks.

2/8th Batt: 2nd Lt Hancok joined from Base. 2nd Lt Lockwood went to the Depot. 3 other ranks to Casualty Clearing Station

10th Batt: Batt inspected by 2nd Army Commander at Harlettes. 2nd Lt LGF Dolley and 2nd Lt CGH Formby joined from Base.

Yeomanry/Cavalry: Regiment relieved by 2nd Batt of British West India Reg and went into Brigade Reserve further down the Wadi.

Home Front:

COUNTY FARMERS’ UNION – Meat Prices Protest – A meeting of the Worcestershire Executive of the National Farmers’ Union was held at the Star Hotel, Worcester, on Saturday. A resolution was passed by the Worcester and Pershore Branches protesting against the prices fixed by the Food Controller’s Order as being unjust to the industry and calculated to lead to a shortage of meat in the near future.

WORCESTERSHIRE AND THE WAR – The late Lieut G Brodie – The following letter from an Army Chaplain dated August 6th, has been received by Mrs Brodie, of Highfield Road, Malvern Link: “You will have heard the sad news of your son’s death. He was wounded severely in action last Wednesday and died on reaching the dressing station. His loss is a matter of deepest regret and concern, not only to his brother officers, with whom he was a great favourite, but also to the Battalion.
