15th October 1914 - Malvern Red Cross fund ambulance

Rolling casualty count: 190

2nd Batt: Passed through Paris at 4:30 am to Bologne and Calais.

3rd Batt: In trenches at Richebourg St Vaast, shelling at intervals. Gen Hamilton, Div Commander killed. Night attack about 6:30pm, intermittent firing during night.

The Worcester Relief Fund: £2800, including a gift of £100 from Mrs Baldwin Childe for the Belgian Refugees;

The Malvern Branch of the Red Cross has received such a generous response to its appeal for funds that it has decided to contribute £400 to their HQ in London for the purchase of a motor ambulance for use abroad. If the ambulance is not destroyed in the course of the war, it will be sent to Malvern when the war is over;

An Evesham soldier has brought home a German Iron Cross, which is being exhibited. ‘ The German Emperor ,’ says, ‘Berrow’s Worcester Journal, ‘ has been very liberal in dispensing these crosses for valour since the war began, but he did not give this one to Lance-Cpl Blakeman of the 3rd Batt WR, who has brought it home to England. Blakeman, who has returned wounded, took the cross from a German officer during the fighting in France, and he proposes to have an inscription put upon it. Blakeman is a Salford Priors’ man, and it seems something in the nature of a coincidence that the hamlet of Iron Cross is in the parish of Salford Priors.
