Armistice activities at Worcester City Museum & Art Gallery

Join the team at Worcester City Museum & Art Gallery on Sunday 11 November for remembrance themed activities and performances from 11am – 4pm as part of the County’s Armistice commemorations. Doors will open at 10.55am allowing people to enter the Museum and Art Gallery ahead of the national two-minute silence at 11am.
From 12noon, expect performances of Harvey’s War Letters. Performed by the Cavan Trio - Janine Parsons (piano), Corinne Frost (cello) and Helena Cavan (composer/poet), Harvey’s War Letters is a remarkable and moving programme of music and poetry inspired by letters sent from the trenches by Harvey George Frost (1893-1974) - all the more poignant when noted that Corinne is Harvey’s granddaughter.
With music by Elgar, Granados, Butterworth, Piazzolla and a specially commissioned new work, it is a truly uplifting and original way of commemorating the end of the Great War. Harvey’s War Letters is a free but ticketed event - please book your place by calling the Art Gallery on 01905 25371.
Throughout the day children are invited to join in with poppy making craft activities and if possible to stay to be part of the poppy drop at 3pm which will see the poppies created throughout the day dropped through the centre of the building. The poppy drop will be announced by a Bugler playing The Last Post.
Visitors to the Museum and Art Gallery can also take a look at watercolours from the Mediterranean Campaign. The paintings amount to 40 pictures of various sizes and feature landscapes, troop dispositions, views of everyday life all captured in watercolours by Major the Lord Hampton when serving as Squadron Leader with The Worcestershire Yeomanry (The Queen’s Own Worcestershire Hussars) in Egypt, Palestine and Syria during the years 1916 to 1919.

The Museum and Art Gallery has shared paintings, objects and stories of Worcestershire’s War over the last four years and it feels right that we welcome families in to share this important date with us.”
