17th December 1916 - Flying Officer from Bromsgrove wins Military Cross

Rolling casualty count: 5127

2nd Batt: The baths at Suzanne were allotted to the Batt. Men cleaning up equipment.

4th Batt: Divine service at 9.30am. Batt had use of the baths and every man had clean under-clothing.

2/8th Batt: Church Parade in am. Four men received from Base.

9th Batt: Batt advanced and had to wheel towards the left to envelop the Turkish position. Men dug -in in a gully (Mulah) which was 13 feet deep. It ran parallel to the Turkish trenches. There were snipers all around.

Home Front:

Catshill Man’s Commission –Regimental Sargeant Major J Nowell, Worcestershire Regiment, has been promoted to 2nd Lieutenancy in his old regiment. He joined the 3rd Worcestershire Regiment at the age of 17 in 1903 and has been in service in Ireland, South Africa and Belgium and is at present with his regiment on service.

Military Cross for Bromsgrovian – The Military Cross has been awarded to Sec.Lieut. L.C. Kidd, Royal Flying Corps, for work during the Somme battle and before it. For several months prior to the advance Lieut. Kidd, was engaged in daily survey of the enemy’s lines and since the first week of July has been flying every day, with rare intermissions, accompanying all the attacks and having many narrow escapes. His observer has also been awarded the Cross. Lieut. Kidd is 23 years of age, is the second son of Dr Cameron Kidd of Bromsgrove.
