11th November 1916 - no exemptions for teachers as women take their places

Rolling casualty count: 4881

4th Batt: practice attacks under barrage carried out.

10th batt: Batt relieved by 9th Royal Welsh fusiliers and returned to billets at Aveluy.

SMD RFA: Batt cutting wire in preparation for a raid north west of Gommecourt

Yeomanry/Cavalry: Enemy aircraft flew low over camp and dropped bombs in the middle of it but no-one was hurt. Two RE officers were taking a water survey but were not hurt.

Home Front:

Teachers and Military Service: A meeting of the Worcestershire Education Committee was held today, Mr. Willis Bund presiding. The Chairman moved, in accordance with notice: (a) That no application for exemption be made to any Tribunal in respect of any teachers or other persons employed by the Committee who may be called up for military service. (b) That the Director be instructed to take immediate steps making provision for filling up with women teachers the places of any teachers called up for military service and for filling up the places of any other persons either with a woman teacher or person rejected.

Fussy Dog: Ellen Grundy, 10, Severn Street, was summoned for being the owner of a dog found straying in Copenhagen Street. P.C. Budd gave evidence. Defendant complained that the dog had a collar on when it went out, and as it was very fussy, someone may have taken the collar off. She was fined 1s.

Hallow Gunner: Gunner T. Freeman R.F.A., (son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Freeman, back of the School, Hallow), has been wounded, and is in a hospital in France. He is nearly 25 years of age, and enlisted in September, 1914. He has been at the front for about 18 months. His parents last saw him on New Year’s Day, 1915, when he had a short leave. Formerly he was an attendant at Barnsley Hall Asylum.
