14th October 1916 - Military Cross for local flyer

Rolling casualty count: 4572

1st Batt: Batt marched to Fouquercoil at 3am to entrain and arrived at Longpre, then marched to billets at Citernes.

2nd Batt: Div Com inspected the Batt on the transport field am. Extended drill of recruits` musketry pm.3rdBatt: Batt in support trench. The 8th North Lancs captured and consolidated the Mounds north of Stuff Redoubt.

4th Batt: Still heavy bombardments day and night. Working parties were deepening Cocoa Alley and repairing the trenches and making fire-steps. Two more Germans came in.

1/8th Batt: A and C Coys relieved at Fosse de la Haie and rejoined the Batt.

2/7th Batt: Batt relieved by 2/8th Worcs and took over their billets at Croix Barbee. B Coy took over Landsdowne, Edwards, Loretto, Peninmariage and St Vlaast Posts. A draft of 51 men arrived in the evening.

Military Cross for Bromsgrovian – The Military Cross has been awarded to Sec. Lieut. L Kidd, Royal Flying Corps, for work during the Somme battle and before it. For several months prior to the advance Lieut. Kidd was engaged in daily survey of the enemy’s lines and sine the first week in July has been flying every day, with rare intermissions, accompanying all the attacks and having many narrow escapes. His observer has also been awarded the cross. Lieut. Kidd, who is 23, is the second son of Dr Cameron Kidd of Bromsgrove.

Battenhall Mount Hospital – Presentation and Concert –There was an interesting presentation on Friday night when the patients and members of the staff said farewell to Mrs Batt, who for a year has given willing service to the hospital. Mrs Batt left New Zealand last year, she had been an inspiration to staff and patients by reason of her good and thorough work.
