3rd October 1916 - Dean's wife presides over meeting to extend women's franchise

Rolling casualty count: 4468

1st batt: relieved the 2nd East Lancs in the front Line. Weather still wet and trenches in a bad state.

2nd Batt: Physical training and parades am and pm prepared for night operations near Lucheux Wood.

4th Batt: Our planes very active in the evening and Germans fired heavily at them. Work hindered by bad weather.

SMD RFA: CO and Brigadier Commander reconnoitred positions on Sailly-Hebuterne Plain.

Baby Drowned at Stourport - An inquest was held in Stourport in respecting the death of Cyril Barns, the 17 month old son of George Barns, of 4 Gilgal, Stourport. The father, who is a postman, said that the door of his backyard opened onto a path leading to the canal bank. Muriel Collett said that she was returning from school and saw the boy Barns at the bottom of the bank. She told him he had better go home and he followed her for a short distance. He then turned round and when she looked for him again he had disappeared. P.C. Howells gave evidence of recovering the body from water about six feet deep. The Jury returned a verdict of “Accidently Drowned”.

Women and the Franchise – Members for the Worcester Society for the Extension of the Franchise to Women met in the vaulted hall of the Deanery on Monday afternoon. Mrs W Moore Ede, who presided said that the women had risen splendidly to the opportunity of service at this time and their work had won support and sympathy for the women’s cause.
