15th April 1916 - Public funeral for victims of Garrick Theatre fire

At the Front:

1st Batt: Four men were wounded on a working party.

2nd Batt: The battery behind the billets was shelled by 4.5 shells, some men were wounded but not in our Batt.

4th Batt: great progress was made in the trenches in spite of rain and snow.

Men resting in bivouacs. The problem of relief was difficult after the unsuccessful battle. Supplies could only hold out until the 21st April and another attack not possible It was decided to win through to Kut along the southern bank of the river.

On the Home Front:

Public Funeral on Thursday – The six little victims of the Garrick Theatre fire at Hereford on Friday were given a public funeral on Thursday, the first part of the burial service being held at the Cathedral. The children’s hymn, “There is a green hill far away” was sung. The funeral was attended by thousands of sympathisers. The Dean officiated at the Cathedral.

Runaway Motor Car - An inquest was held at Gloucester on Friday on Mrs Norah Elizabeth Smith, aged 30, wife of Mr Charles T Smith, formerly proprietor of the Lode Hotel, Tewkesbury. Mr Smith and his wife and daughter motored from Cheltenham to Lower Lode. The chauffeur started his engine for the return and had just got on the footboard to get into the car when it started off down the incline towards the River Severn, Mrs Smith had her back to the car and did not hear the shouts of her husband and was knocked down. The car ran into the Severn. The Jury returned a verdict that the running away of the motor-car was an accident.
