4th April 1916 - Pershore vegetables for the fleet

At the Front:

8th Batt: Batt moved to Brigade Reserve HQ. 2 Coys were at Sailly and 2 at Coigneux in huts.

9th Batt: Batt lay quiet under cover listening to firing close in front of the Divisional Line.

SMD RFA: Germans shelled trenches in front of Gommecourt Wood.Trouble experienced from Minenwerfers.

4th Batt: Marched to Leuvencourt, 16 miles away, allowing half an hour for dinner. Brigade marched past Commander Lt General A Hunter –Weston,KCB, DSO who was accompanied by Major General HB de Lisle, CB, DSO( O/C 29th Division.)

Gen Hunter-Weston complimented CO Major Kerans on the Batt and asked that all men and officers who had served under him in the Gallipli Campaign how pleased he was to have them back under his command. Men were given a ration of rum with their tea.

On the Home Front:

King’s School Regatta – The Worcester Cathedral School continued their regatta on Monday afternoon. The first race which was between Castle House and School House was very exciting with keeping close all along the course which was from Canal Lock to the Deanery.

Pershore vegetables for the fleet - Mrs Kings of Elmley House, Pershore has received a letter from one of the ships in the fleet acknowledging the receipt of a bag of vegetables. The writer said ' I wish to thank you on behalf of this ships company and myself for your kindness…we are always pleased to get hold of a few vegetables. We are at present doing our bit on patrol duty in the North Sea looking for trouble and occasionally finding it. We are all keeping merry and bright and looking forward to a few hours leave at home. I should like to be able to tell you something about our doings but that is not allowed'.
