16th April 1916 - Pershore Market Gardeners application to Tribunal

At the Front:

4th Batt: Divine Service in Mailly-Maillet. 2nd Lt O`Neil and 12 other ranks proceeded to Engdelmen to form a trench-mortar Battery.

8th Batt: Coy training in musketry and close order drill continued. Wet weather hampered training consistently and caused discomfort to all ranks in bivouacs.

9th Batt: 39th Brigade filed across a floating bridge from Falahiya to the southern bank in support of the 3rd Division.

10th Batt: CO and several officers of 13th RWF 113 Brigade visited the trenches before taking over tomorrow. Rats are becoming a great pest and are increasing in numbers.

SMD RFA: French airmen practised night flying in the evening. Capt and Adj JC Dixey, on leave, was recalled, to leave London today.

On the Home Front:

Before the Tribunals - Pershore Market Gardeners Application

The Pershore District Tribunal sat at the workhouse on Wednesday to hear applications for exemptions from military service. Arthur William Reynold, market gardener and carrier of Little Comberton applied on his own behalf on the grounds of serious hardship. He was given a month. John Davis, Farmer of Bredon's Norton claimed exemption on the grounds of domestic and financial hardship. He managed a farm of 123 acres with only one man, aged 60 and the applicant had to do the ploughing. He was granted total exemption.

Worcester Glee Club – concluding concert of the season

At the Crown Hotel on Wednesday the Mayor, Ald Leicester, presided over a large attendance including the High Sheriff and a good number of committee members. The programme included Overture Morning, Noon and Night, Drinking Song and Somewhere a Voice is calling. The band included Mr Corfield of Birmingham as cornet player. All performances well received.
