6th March 1916 - 2nd Bn hold 'sapping' classes

At the Front:

2nd Batt: CO inspected A Coy in marching order am. “Sapping” and “bombing” classes were held and lectures under the Coy Commander.

8tyh Batt: Trenched filling with frozen water due to the thaw, Depth of water varying from 1 foot to 3 feet 6inches. Frost at night made conditions harder.

SMD RFA: Second Lt BHB Allen moved back to 36th Division on being appointed to a regular commission.

9th Batt: “Edavana” moved off again to Fao and anchored off that port after dark.

On the Home Front:

Arrested at the Cinema: Frank Armitage (14) was charged with stealing from the cabin of a canal boat, the “Island Queen,” at Severn Bridge, a leather wallet containing 13 £1 Treasury notes, one 10s. Treasury note, a cheque book, and 5s. 6d. in money, belonging to Henry Rice, his master…At 4 o’clock the same day D.C. Handley brought the wallet to him. Mr. Skan, tobacconist, Foregate Street, said that the boy came to the shop for a shilling box of cigarettes. Detective Handley said that on Thursday afternoon he was in the Cinema, and, overhearing a conversation, he sat near the boy, who pulled out a large box of cigarettes. Calling him outside he asked where he got the money from, and after he had searched him and found the notes, the boy admitted the theft. He had in his possession £13 13s. 5d…The Chairman said they considered the capture of the boy and the recovery of the money was a very smart performance, and great credit was due to Detective Handley. The Chief Constable: It was the result of observation of little things.
