An inquest was held at Colchester on Friday on the body of Driver Alfred Frank Cropper of the 7th Provincial Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Before joining the army in September 1914 he was a skin dresser of Bowling Green Terrace Worcester. The coroner said the deceased was kicked on the head by a horse in the stables at Thorpe on Feb 11 and he died on Feb 22. Sgt Hart, 7th Provincial Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, said he saw the deceased passing his own horse, leading another horse. He spoke to his own horse in a friendly way when it kicked out very high and struck him on the right eye. Deceased fell down and he was then taken to the military hospital at Colchester. The deceased was a very careful man. Witness had never known a horse to kick a man before. Deceased admitted with fracture of the skull and was operated on, but died of meningitis. The Coroner said this appeared to be a pure accident and the Jury brought in a verdict accordingly.
