7th February 1916 - 9th Battalion still weak in numbers

At the Front:

1st Batt: Very quiet in the trenches, weather fine and sunny.

2nd Batt: Batt relieved and marched to Billets in Bethune. In previous two weeks in the Auchy Section, 8 men were killed and 45 wounded.

9th Batt: Still weak in numbers, only 600 strong (27 officers and 578 other ranks.)

10th Batt: Batt, less A Coy, went for a route march to St Venant, Guardeque and Busnes. First day of innoculation against Typhoid.

On the Home Front:

The zeppelin! has been and gone; but “malvoma” cucumber have not yet come for this season they will be ready at the end of February the plants are growing now in their home Tomatoland, Malvern.

Former Bromyard schoolmaster’s action- Denies uttering pro-German sentiments

Mr Adolphus Charles Wetters, temporary schoolmaster at Allenmore, Bromyard, and Peterchurch, during the Herefordshire teachers’ strike, bought an action for libel against Mr. John. The action was brought to recover damages for libel contained in a letter. This letter, the plaintiff said, reflected on him as a schoolmaster and a loyal subject of the king. All the trouble that had arisen was due to the fact that the plaintiff bore the name that he did. This had given rise to the belief that he was a German, or, at all events, of German origin. The Judge held that in point of law it was impossible for the plaintiff to succeed. On this point of law the jury returned a verdict in favour of the defendant
