A Revised Plea. Result: Fine and Sentences

There was a startling development in the trial of the three partners in Fownes Bros. and Co. when the judge took his seat at the Old Bailey.

The Judge, addressing the Jury, said Defendants have, I think, really anticipated what was necessarily the result of the trial, and by pleading guilty, at all events have saved you the trouble of giving a verdict. If persons of commercial distinction and great dealings like yourselves are caught, as you have been caught infringing legislation, and , if, being so caught, you are not dealt with severely, how is it possible for the law to deal with small and comparatively obscure persons who break the law? You have traded with the enemy.

Ledbury Clerk in Trouble

At Ledbury Police Court, George Henry Vaughn was charged with stealing the sum of £2 7s 1d, belonging to Charles Howe. Defendant was dressed in Khaki. ‘I had the money from Mr. Howe, and I did not send it away. I used it to make up something else, I did not benefit by it. I did not take it away with me’ The bench decided not to register a conviction, being wishful to give defendant a chance to redeem the past.
