20th January 1916 - Runaway bus stopped by wounded soldier

Rolling Casualty Count: 2710

At the Front:

SAMD RFA: Germans shelled heavily round 3rd Worcester Batt Observation Post.

1st Batt: In trenches, a fine day but rather windy.

On the Home Front:

City Police Court: Absentee: William John Vaughan (17), 4 Court, Pheasant Street was charged with being an absentee from the 3/8th Worcestershire Regiment. He was remanded to await an escort.

Hallow Whist Drive: The whist drive in aid of British Prisoners of War, held in the Schools last Boxing Night, resulted in the large sum of £7 12s being sent to Lady Dodde, of Devonshire House, Piccadilly who has charge of the Fund in connection with the British Red Cross Society. A feature of the evening’s amusement was the guessing competitions which brought in a considerable sum. Thanks are due to the donors of prizes.

Runaway Stopped by Wounded Soldier: While a motor ‘bus from Worcester, conveying wounded soldiers from Battenhall V.A.D. Hospital, was passing through Kempsey, on Wednesday afternoon, a horse attached to a baker’s cart, apparently startled by the noise of the ‘bus, bolted and dashed up the main road behind the motor. The driver of the ‘bus at once pulled up and Pte. George Davis, of the 1st Battalion, Worcs Regiment, at once sprang from his seat, and, at considerable risk to himself, succeeded in catching hold of the runaway’s reins, and bringing him to a standstill. Great credit is due to Pte. Davis for his prompt action. There was no-one in the baker’s cart and the horse was under no control.

Gymnastics at Home: This is the age of gymnastic and physical exercises, and yet we do not begin them quite soon enough with the majority of children. These exercises should be begun at home, because in their early days, much may be done by the parent in thus benefiting the children…In early years children contract bad habits which injure their health. These exercises should teach them how to breathe properly, how to sit, to stand, and to walk; and their regular use would be of great advantage.
