16th January 1916 - Obstinate donkey helps to raise funds for regimental comforts

Rolling Casualty Count: 2706

At the Front:

1st Batt: Baths and cleaning up generally. A calm, hazy day.

SMRFA: CO went on an Officers` course at Beauval.

On the Home Front:

Regimental Comforts Fund Sale: Great amusement was caused when the more serious part of the sale was stopped for a few minutes, and the auctioneer appealed for bids for a donkey, who, adorned with the Union Jack, had been paraded round the city by Boy Scouts. The animal did not appreciate the fun, and, as he obstinately refused to walk into the building, he had to be pushed in backwards. In this way he was exhibited round the room, and if his gait was slow, it was very amusing. He was sold several times, and, altogether, made about £12. The most expensive lot sold was an antique supper tray fitted with six blue and white Spode dishes, which realised £32. A twelve-stone diamond ring was sold for £15.
