23rd August 1915 - Stourbridge lieutenant killed in Gallipoli

1st Batt. In billets. Certain amount of shelling Neux Aux Chapelle, no damage. 2nd Batt. Our sharpshooters smashed a German telescope.

In Evesham Petty Sessions Division: Affiliation Order imposed on Joseph Alfred Matthews, labourer of St Johns, Worcester. Defendant summoned by Mary Clements, singlewoman of Sedgeberrow. The Defendant admitted paternity. The Plaintiff stated that the Defendant was a married man whereupon the Defendant said "What I want to know is, can't you make an order for me to live with this woman – the complainant – as I would sooner live with her than this other woman (his wife). Matthews was charged 2s per week until the child reached 13.

Lt George Turney Pearson of Stourbridge was killed in action at Gallipoli on 12 August. He was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs Alfred Pearson and had attended Repton and Worcester College Oxford. He had previously visited Russia as tutor to the son of Prince Obolensky. He had acted at the Theatre Royal, Worcester and worked in Rhodesia before accepting a commission in the 9th battalion. Their second son is serving as a Midshipman in the Royal Navy.
