29th August 1915 - Arthur Carlton's only son killed in Dardenelles

1st Batt. A quiet day and night, Lieut. Smyth Osbourne V.C. 'A' company killed, shot through head. Weather cool and raining. 2nd Batt. In billets at Bethune attended Divine Service in the Theatre.

The death has been announced of Private Lawrence Carlton, Royal Army Medical Corps, only son of High Sheriff, Arthur Carlton. Alderman Carlton had only received a letter from his son dated 3rd August, the morning he was notified of his son's death. Private Carlton was in the Dardenelles. He was attending to a wounded soldier on a stretcher close by the firing line at the Advanced Dressing Station at Aghyldere, when machine gun bullets sprayed the area and he was shot through the heart. He was 22.

Among the crew on board the White Star liner Arabic, torpedoed by a German submarine on 21st August was Charles Holloway of Wribbenhall, Bewdley. He served his apprenticeship at Hepworth's printers and stationers in the Bull Ring, Kidderminster and then joined the ocean liners. He had been on the Arabic for nine years.
