5th March 1915 - Lea and Perrins in recipe pickle

RECRUITING: The Worcestershire Regiment. Attend all men who list to hear. Scarce 500 men of the Worcestershire Regiment charged right through the shot-swept streets of Gheluvelt, right up to the lost trenches, almost into the heart of the German host, and the Germans turned and fled – Fled when the odds at this moment were more than twenty to one in their favour, and, fleeing, lost for ever their chance of breaking through to Calais. Wor’Shire Sauce Recipe: Today, in the Chancery Division, Messrs. Lea and Perrins, Worcester sued William Dyson Barnitt, West Smithfield, London, claiming an injunction restraining him from making use of a recipe purporting to contain the formula from which the plaintiffs made Worcestershire Sauce, and for making known the contents of the recipe to other persons. The defendant was the son of a deceased partner in Lea and Perrins, and the surviving partners bought the deceased’s interest. At the time the defendant was asked if he had any copy of the recipe of the sauce, and he replied, “No,” but since then (said Council) he had written letters which, plaintiff alleged, suggested that he had such a copy, and was about to make use of it…Mr. Maugham, for defendant, said that the action was a “storm in a teacup.” Defendant did not deny that he had recipe, but it was not the recipe from which plaintiffs made their sauce, nor did he obtain it from his father’s papers. His Lordship declined to grant an injunction, defendant having made an affidavit which met plaintiff’s cause of action by saying that his recipe was obtained from an untainted source. He dismissed the action, the plaintiffs to pay defendant’s costs from the date when he made his affidavit;

Worcester City have an attractive engagement for tomorrow afternoon, Walsall being the visitors to St. George’s Lane ground. Walsall have a sporting chance for the Championship. Not changes have been made from the team which did duty last week. The visitors will be at full strength.
