16th September 1914 - First battalion of British part-time territorial troops, the 1/14th Battalion, London Regiment –known as the London Scottish– lands in France
L/Cpl. George Edwin Barnett 9719; Pte. Arthur Read 8865; L/Cpl. Sidney Smith 10762 (all 2nd Battalion) and Pte. Charles James Morley 9886 (3rd Battalion) killed
2nd Batt: Still in same position, shelled all day, 7 wounded. Relieved by Connaught Rangers about 7pm. The battalion had to dig themselves in for protection from shell fire;
3rd Batt: In same position in the trenches at Vailly, very heavy shelling in morning, intermittent shelling throughout the day. More casualties, 9 wounded.
Mr Charles Williams of 52 York Place had 5 sons and his son in law serving, 4 were at the Front and 2 had last been heard of in Egypt;
Worcester had less unemployment than many places but work people on short time were 'causing the greater portion of the distress', 91 out of a 106 applicants had been granted relief to a total of £16 3s 4d.
There was considerable suffering for women and girls especially among glovers and button makers. Their normal wages were very small but when reduced to 2 days they had insufficient to live on. The probable cause of falling employment in the button works was because the bulk of their trade used to be done with Germany.
