16th August 1914 - Soldiers' dependents queue for relief

Some 120 women and persons had applied for some form of relief at the Guildhall, around 100 were wives of soldiers. The total included some 20 widows, who were dependent upon sons now in service.

600 of the 2000 men needed for the additional 2 Worcs. Battalions had been recruited. Recruitment for a small corps of Army vet work was taking place, nearly 30 already on duty with the Worcs Yeomanry, most of the recruits had been engaged with horses all their lives.

The 3rd Worcs. Battalion arrived at Aulnoye.

French and Bavarian troops engaged one another in an action of some consequence in the region of Blamont, Cirey and the heights of the Ambels. The Germans, which suffered heavy losses, were driven back, leaving their dead and wounded. The French continued to advance in the Vosges, and have recaptured Thann.
