7th August 1914 - British Expeditionary Force (BEF), under the command of Field Marshal Sir John French, begins to land in France. Disembarkation completed on 16 August.

Worcestershire's first war death. HM Amphion, brand new cruiser, sank after striking a mine. Paymaster C.D. Gedge and 130 men lost. Harold Waller, a former Stoke Farm Reformatory School boy at Bromsgrove, was a stoker aboard the vessel and was one of the men who lost their life.

The first appeals for men aged 19 to 30 appeared: 'Your Country Needs You: A Call to Arms' .

Reservists were called up : 7 Reservists from Police Force had been recalled, 12 men from Worcester Post Office had already departed, several others had received the call; 6 men from Messrs. Lewis, Clarke & Co Brewery had been called to the Colours.

The war seriously affected the 20th Madresfield Agricultural Club, both exhibits and attendance were reduced. 'If the times had been tranquil the Band of the Worcestershire Hussars would have played...'
