20th August 1914 - Battle of Gumbinnen. Advancing Russian troops drive back German forces in East Prussia.

The 3rd Worcs. Batt marched 7 miles to Dompierre and then to Avesnes. They were received by an 'enthusiastic populace' before marching back to Dompierre. The Worcester Yeomanry were billeted on the east coast, shortly to go under canvas for 3 months training.

The Worcester City Fund reached £740.

A shortage of Christmas toys was predicted as the British Toy Industry was small and relied on millions of toys imported from Germany. A letter from two sons of a city business manager: 'Dear Mr Mayor - we were at Dawlish when the war broke out, so we saved up our money for the War Relief Fund - Enclosed please find 5s'.
